4 Chicken Coop Plans for Bantams

Raising chickens has become a high demanding job amongst farmers. You may not think that keeping chickens, feeding them, breeding them and using their eggs for food would be practiced regularly as it was in the past. Sure, times have changed and there are now many chicken raising factories that have automated egg hatcheries and such, but the fundamental procedures of raising chickens grows more and more each year as the world's population continues to grow. Hence it is vital for a chicken raising farmer to understand these concepts and learn how to build a chicken coop.

For many of us who have a backyard chicken flock, one of the key issues we come across is finding some really good chicken coop plans for building chicken coops. There are hundreds of different breeds of chickens and as any experienced chicken farmer will tell you, it is not a good idea to keep certain types of chickens together in the same chicken coop.

The bantam chickens are the ones that do not grow any larger than one fifth to one quarter of the size of a standard chicken breed. They are known as the miniature classes of chickens and they are extremely cute and fun to watch.

While there aren't many chicken coop plans designed especially for bantam chickens, I have found through my experience raising chickens that bantams and standard chickens differ in other ways besides their size. Therefore I have put together some chicken coop plans tips that will help you build a chicken coop for these miniature fowls.

Build a chicken coop that is tall and has multiple long and high perches. Unlike large standard chickens which tend to hang around at the bottom of the coop due to their excessive weight, small bantams can easily jump up to the highest perches, giving your chicken coop plenty of space to keep more chickens. Build plenty of perches, nests and feeders so that the bantams can jump around from perch to perch and eat from any part of the coop.

Bantam chickens have tendencies to jump really high and some can almost fly across an entire field. Therefore you want to make sure that if your chicken coop has an attached chicken pen or chicken run, it is covered with a high net or its surroundings have really high fences. The last thing you want is for your bantam chicken to fly over your fence because they are not smart enough to jump back across.

Bantams can be quite feisty. As cute as they are, bantam roosters can become quite aggressive when their territory is threatened. You may want to separate the chicken coop into smaller compartments with chicken wire. Keep one rooster per every three hens.

Be aware of injured bantams. For some strange reason, I have had many of my bantam chickens get eaten alive by the other bantams. This may sound absurd but it is true. Chickens tend to peck at each other at times and if they draw blood, the other chickens will begin pecking at the blood and eventually killing off the innocent chicken. This is why you should remove any chicken that you notice has been pecked or injured and keep it in its own cage for a week until it heals.

By following the chicken coop plans above you should have an easier time raising bantam chickens in your backyard. Bantams can be quite adorable but they require a lot of maintenance and care if you truly want to get the best out of your chicken flock.

Are you confident enough yet to build your own chicken coop? Many people have had success building their own coop and saved a lot of money in doing so. These are only just a few tips to help you on your chicken raising endeavors. For detailed chicken coop plan and instructions you should try these

Try a Beer Can Chicken to Add Something New to Your Recipes

It is natural to get tired of eating the same type of food over and over again. Seeing that we are gifted with the ability to choose what we like and what we don't like through our taste buds, there is no surprise that we are always looking something new to try. One food type that is used in nearly most food types is chicken. However eating the same type of chicken gets pretty boring. If that is the case with you as well, have you considered making a beer can chicken. As the name suggests beer can chicken requires you to use a beer can as part of the cooking process. What you do have to keep in mind about a beer can chicken is that it is not suitable for those that do not drink. Some of you may not drink due to cultural or social beliefs. If this is the case then ideally you should look for a different recipe.

The whole idea of a beer can chicken is that it gives a juicy centre filling to the chicken. Instead of simply baking it in an oven, you would be looking to use a grill instead. So how do you make one? There are many ways through which you can go about making a beer can chicken. The most common way that is used a lot is quite simple to be frank. You need to start off by making sure you have a beer can. Make sure that it is only half full. You can either drink half of it or pour it out; which either way suits you better.

\"chicken Recipe\"

Next take a baby chicken and make sure it is clean and ready to go. Simply place the chicken over the can and make sure it sits right on top of it. Once you have done so, squeeze the chicken onto the beer can so it is inserted in the rear end of the chicken. This part can now vary depending on how you want your chicken to be. You can add any type of topping that you want on the chicken's skin layer. This is mainly done to give the chicken skin a crispy finish. As mentioned earlier, you can simply try different ingredients and toppings depending on what you are after. After having done so, all you have to do is place the chicken into a grill at medium heat for about two hours and there you have it.

The above description of how to make a beer can chicken was one that is pretty basic. It was used to give you an idea of how they are actually made. What you have to keep in mind is that the recipe for making beer can chicken may vary from person to person. There are many resources available online which you can always refer to for new ideas on making such a dish. All you have to do is search online for beer can chicken recipes.

Different Types of Chicken Breeds

When picking a chicken you will want to look at their individual breeds. This is necessary as some of them live great together and others have a attitude that requires them to with their own kind. Even though there are over sixty chicken breeds to choose from, there are a few that are more popular than all the others.

Here are some of the breeds that may be of some interest-

Barnevelder- During the early part of the twentieth century this chicken was the main egg laying bird. These breeds average around two hundred brown eggs annually.

Rhode Island Reds- This chicken breed is the hero of most of the barnyards. They can amazingly lay around three hundred eggs annually! and so are lauded for this capability to yield one of the greatest number of eggs. These birds are also excellent pets.

Light Sussex- These chickens have a unique feature since they are the ones that are normally found at chicken state fairs and beauty pageants! In their egg producing capabilities, they are almost identical to the Rhode Island Reds. This chicken breed is also among the top level egg layers and they lay around two hundred and fifty eggs annually

Buff Orpington- This is one of the chicken breeds that is famous for their fluffy feathers and extreme cuteness. They are a larger or 'heavy' breed and have a calm and friendly nature. But they can be moody and are not the best for producing eggs. Their looks compensate for their low egg production and that is the only reason people love keeping the Buff Orpington around. They are bright golden in color and this really accentuates in the sunlight.

Different Types of Chicken Breeds

This article covered some of the main chicken breeds, I will try to cover more different breeds and give you a brief description of some of the other major birds too in my next article. Real Jamaican Jerk Chicken Recipe

Jerk is one of the most popular styles of Jamaican cooking. It is used for cooking meat, traditionally pork or goat, but nowadays chicken and fish as well. All jerk dishes are spicy, even fiery, but they can be very tasty and are appreciated by many spice lovers.

The main secret behind the flavor of jerk is in the preparation of the meat. This is done by marinading the meat in a mixture of spices known as "Jamaican jerk spice". Ideally, you should marinade the meat over night in the 'fridge and then cook the following day. Rather than just letting the marinade soak into the meat, I would suggest making some light cuts in the surface of the meat, and rubbing the marinade into these as well as the meat generally.

\"chicken Recipe\"

As already mentioned, Jamaican jerk spice is a actually a mixture of several spices. It gets most of its flavor from two particular ingredients, namely Jamaican allspice (also known as "pimento" or "pimenta") and Scotch bell peppers. Jerk spice also usually contains several other spices such as garlic, cloves, cinnamon and thyme, and is usually mixed with chopped onions and/or scallions before being applied to the meat.

The best way to cook jerk chicken is over a charcoal barbecue grill. Ideally, you should place some pimento wood or berries on the grill - but if this is not possible you can put some hickory or apple on the coals instead. Of course, barbecuing meat is not always possible, for example during the Winter or if you live in a city - in that case, you can instead roast the meat in a normal kitchen oven, and still get good results.

Best of the Really Spicy Authentic Jamaican Jerk Chicken Recipes

Most Jamaican Jerk Chicken Recipes found outside of Jamaica are a major disappointment. They usually consist of some weak, slightly spicy chicken breast that is grilled and served. These jerk recipes do not even come close to what you will find in the jerk huts of Jamaica.

This Jamaican jerk chicken recipe will change all that. We're talking about smoking-hot, well-seasoned jerk chicken, cooked the way it was meant to be. The flavor goes right to the bone, and the complexity of all the ingredients is mind-blowing.

\"chicken Recipes\"

This authentic jerk recipe begins with a wet marinade over thighs and drumsticks, and never breasts. The really important flavors in this recipe are thyme, allspice, and hot chiles. This recipe does not skimp on chiles and is very spicy. It uses a charcoal grill for best results and authenticity.

In Jamaica, jerk chicken is normally cooked over pimento branches (allspice). If apple wood is easier to find, we will be using that. But extra allspice will have to be added to make up the difference. The chicken is smoked at slow temperatures for a time, then grilled quickly to crisp up the skin.

Authentic Jamaican Jerk Chicken Recipe

This makes enough jerk chicken for about 4-6 servings, so double the recipe if needed.

1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1 bunch of green onions, white and green parts roughly chopped
3 large garlic cloves, roughly chopped
2-3 habanero or Scotch bonnet peppers, stemmed and seeded
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 2 tsp. dried)
1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon kosher or sea salt
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon dry or freshly grated nutmeg
3 pounds bone-in chicken drums and thighs
2 large handfuls apple wood chips, soaked in water for about 30 minutes

1) Combine the marinade ingredients and process in a blender or food processor for about one minute until pulverized. Use rubber gloves when handling the peppers.

2) Trim and discard any large pieces of fat on the chicken pieces. Cut a few shallow slits in each piece of chicken. This will let the flavors of the marinade and the smoke seep into the chicken. Place all chicken pieces into a large, sealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade into the bag, seal, and mix it all around the chicken. Place in refrigerator to marinade for 12-16 hours.

3) Prepare a charcoal fire with higher heat on one side, and lower heat on the other (two-tone fire). Push the charcoal all the way to one side so it only covers about 1/3rd of the charcoal grate. If you are using a smoker, set it for a heat range of 225-250 degrees Fahrenheit. Drain the water from the apple chips, and add about half of them to the grill.

4) Remove the chicken from the plastic bag and let sit on a tray for 20-30 minutes before grilling. Pour the marinade into a small saucepan and keep it refrigerated for the first hour of the chicken cooking.

5) Use a wire brush to clean the cooking grate. When the apple wood begins to smoke, start grilling the chicken, skin side down, over the side of the grill without the charcoal (indirect heat). Close the lid and keep closed as much as possible.

6) Bring the marinade to a boil, and let it boil for about 30 seconds or so to kill any bacteria. Brush the marinade all over the chicken, then turn skin side up. Add the remaining wood chips, cover, and continue to grill for another 45 minutes to an hour.

7) At this point, the meat will be very tender, but the skin will be soft and rubbery. Move the chicken to the hot side of the grill, skin side down first, and cook until well-browned on all sides (5-10 minutes), turning once or twice, and moving pieces around for even cooking. Serve chicken warm.

Once again, this is not for weak. But the spices and flavors from this authentic Jamaican jerk chicken recipe will have you saying "no worries" in no time.

Easy Quinoa Chicken Recipe With Garlic

Quinoa is probably one of the most versatile super foods we have around, you can either serve it as a main course or a side dish. It's packed with high-quality protein and essential nutrients, it's filling and it tastes good so what more can you ask for?

I love serving quinoa with my favorite meat- chicken, the two ingredients taste really good together. One simple recipe that I found is the quinoa chicken with garlic. To make this recipe you need: 1 cup uncooked quinoa, 2 cups chicken broth, 20 leaves fresh basil (chopped), 1 ½ lbs chicken breasts (cubed), 4 tablespoons olive oil, 1 onion (diced), 1 red bell pepper (seeded and diced), 1 green bell pepper (seeded and diced), 2 tablespoons minced fresh garlic and salt and pepper to taste.

\"chicken Recipe\"

Boil the chicken broth with quinoa (like how you would cook rice) and turn down the heat, simmer it for 15 minutes or until all the liquid is fully absorbed. Mix the basil and set the mixture aside. Heat oil and stir fry the chicken until it is cooked, add vegetables and cook for about 2 minutes. Add garlic, green bell pepper and red bell pepper and stir fry until you see them a little bit lump. Season it with salt and pepper. Your last step would be to top the quinoa with the stir fry mixture. Now that's easy huh?

This quinoa chicken recipe will make 4 servings. I always cook this when I'm in a hurry and I hardly have time to cook. Feel free to add more vegetables if you want. I usually add carrots and sometimes I put green beans or broccoli.

Chicken Pox- Symptoms

Chicken pox is a disease that affects mainly children. It is contagious and can be spread even through air. The main way of chicken pox transmission is by direct contact with the person infected by chicken pox. Like many other disease, chicken pox also has symptoms. These signs will appear about three weeks after infection with the virus that causes chicken pox. The reason for this is because the chicken pox virus has an incubation period. The proper medical term fro chicken pox is actually varicella, because the name of the virus that causes this children' s disease is called varicella zoster.

As I have said earlier, chicken pox has few symptoms. Some of them may not even be noticeable. The first signs of chicken pox set off very sudden and there are cases when the chicken pox patient will actually have no symptoms at all. A mild fever, some weakness and tiredness are the first chicken pox symptoms that you will feel, after the incubation period is over. Soon after this signs of chicken pox, a rash will start to appear on your skin. At first only some areas of your body will be affected by these tiny, red spots. The main target of chicken pox rash are at first the chest and back. Then, just in a couple of hours it will spread all over your body. Even places like the mouth and scalp will eventually be affected by chicken pox.

The next step that will happen in your child' s chicken pox case is that the rash will start to develop into blisters that are filled with fluid. Eventually, these chicken pox blisters will dry, form scabs and fall off. Children are more fortunate than adults when it come to chicken pox symptoms, as well as chicken pox complications caused by infection. If there is the case of infection in a child that suffers from chicken pox, rest assure that this will be a very mild case, with no side- effect. On the other hand, if an adult suffers from chicken pox, mainly because he/ she did not have this disease when being a child, things can get more complicated.

So, as you can see, chicken pox has few symptoms at the beginning of the disease. When the rash appears, and then the blisters, then things get more clear. However, you will not know if your child has been infected with chicken pox for more than two weeks, which is the incubation period of the chicken pox virus.

Chicken Coup - 5 Proven Ways to Winterize Your Chicken Coup

Winterizing your chicken coup is very important if you want your chickens to stay healthy and not get sick during winter. Now, how much you need to winterize your chicken coup will obviously depend on what type of climate you live in.

If you live in a very mild climate, you may not need to change much at all. But if you live in a harsher and chilly climate, you need to take the necessary steps to make sure your chickens are warm and have a nurturing environment to live in during the winter season.

To avoid risking the health of your chickens, here are 5 proven ways to winterize your chicken coup.

1) For birds with feathers, consider the weather (early)

Perhaps you are building your coop during summer. Well, then remember that your chickens want to be happy and healthy during all seasons. And if you live in a climate where the temperature drops below sub zero degrees many months of the year, you need to prepare for that. To do that, build walls that can hold insulation that the birds can't pick or eat away at.

2) Pine shavings stop the bird's complaining.

If you place pine shavings on the floor and shelves where the birds sleep at night, this will help keep them more warm and cozy during the cold season.

3) Chickens need water, not ice.

I know, big surprise huh? Chickens need fresh flowing water, not frosty ice. That means you must make the necessary arrangements in heating so their water supply doesn't freeze during the cold months.

4) "Break the ice" with ceramic lights.

Another very popular proven way to winterize your chicken coup is to use ceramic lamps for extra heat. The unique thing about this type of lamp is that it doesn't produce light, only heat. Keep in mind though that it's important to place these lamps in the right location and at the right height where none of the animals (or you) happen to move it by accident.

5) Who doesn't like a wind stopper?

In the plans for how to build a chicken coop, in some designs you can use shower curtains on the outside of the chicken coup. This effectively works like a wind stopper, keeping cold winds and snow from blowing through. This method may eliminate the need for you to install heating in the coop, but you have to be the judge of that.

Simple But Healthy Chicken And Vegetable Recipes

Chicken and vegetables combine together to create delicious meals that are inexpensive as well as easy to prepare. Chicken is also one of the healthiest meats of all but, if you want it to be even better for you, remove the skin before eating to eliminate a whopping two-thirds of the fat content in the meat.

However, you can leave the skin on while cooking as this will not affect the final fat content but will allow the meat to stay juicy and tender.

\"chicken Recipes\"

Another simple tip for making chicken even healthier is if you are making chicken and vegetable soup, allow the broth to cool before adding the vegetables then skim off the fat that forms on the top of the chicken broth. Again, the taste will not be affected but the chicken soup will have considerably less fat.

A variety of vitamin packed vegetables can be used in chicken recipes such as carrots and potatoes; two rather popular vegetables that can be prepared in many different ways but any style complement chicken perfectly. Boiled potatoes are ideal for chicken soups and stews while raw potatoes can be cut into slices or strips and fried in the skillet with the meat.

Mashed potatoes and gravy with chicken and another vegetable such as corn or green beans are a favorite dish of many. Use slices or chunks of carrots in your chicken noodle soups or chicken stews and steam carrots to serve with baked chicken dishes.

Although definitely a fruit and not a vegetable, tomatoes are, yet another great choice if you want to add a bit of a Mediterranean taste to some of your chicken recipes. Use diced, pureed, or stewed tomatoes to create sauces for baking with chicken.

Use broccoli and cauliflower for baked chicken with plenty of cheese, butter, or margarine, and some of your favorite seasonings for a delicious and filling meal. Also, do not forget about eggplant, squash, and zucchini as well as lettuce, spinach, and other greens that can be used to make a tasty salad with cooked pieces of shredded, diced, or chopped chicken.

How to Pound Chicken Breasts Like a Pro

Chicken breasts can be chopped up or cooked whole. They can also be pounded thinly or sliced thinly, for dishes like chicken piccata or various stuffed, grilled chicken recipes. There is no need to both slice and pound the chicken, since you can pound it as thinly as you need it.

Before you start, you will need either a meat mallet with a smooth side or a flat-bottomed frying pan. A wooden rolling pin is another option. Do not use a spiky meat mallet because these are for tenderizing beef and will tear right through your chicken or leave it looking ragged.

\"chicken Recipes\"

Spray some oil on to the meat so the mallet slides on it, then begin to pound in the center. Bring down the mallet and let it slide off one side, rather than just crash into the center of the chicken breast.

Put the chicken between two sheets of wax paper or saran wrap before you begin, if you like, to minimize mess. Saran wrap is perhaps the better option because wax paper can tear. Put a little water between each sheet of saran wrap and the chicken, and then you will find the mallet slides more easily.

You can either turn the meat between each blow or let the meat mallet slip off in a slightly different direction each time you hit it, in order for the chicken to have an even thickness. Keep pounding it until it is a quarter of an inch thick all over.

Beef, turkey, pork and most other meats can be pounded in the same way. Remember that this is not a test of strength. The goal is not to see how hard you can hit the meat but to get it uniformly thin and not tear it.

Ideas for Flattened Boneless Chicken

Roll a flattened chicken breast around a filling and wrap bacon around it for a classic dish. You might need to use toothpicks to secure the filling and the bacon, so remember to remove them before serving the stuffed chicken recipe. This is especially good if you grill it, because of the smoky flavor you will get.

You can flatten chicken and slice it into strips for making stir fries. Alternative you can roll a flattened chicken breast in flour and pan fry or broil it for a couple of minutes or until it is done. Flattened chicken breasts cook very fast.

Recipe for Pounded Pork Tenderloin

What you will need:

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 lbs pork tenderloin or boneless chicken
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

How to make it:

Pound the pork or chicken with the smooth side of a meat mallet to tenderize it. Stir together the soy sauce, sugar, salt and pepper and marinate the meat in this mixture for two hours.

Heat the oil in a skillet over a moderate heat, and then pan fry the meat for a minute or until it is cooked through. You will find that pounded meat cooks much faster than thicker meat, which means that pounded recipes like this one are fantastic if you are in a rush.

Deep Fryer Cooking - A Beginner's Guide to Perfect Food

Deep-frying is something that a lot of people have never tried and instead have left to the fast food outlets and restaurants. Deep-frying is actually quite easy though, when you know how it is done, and a deep fryer is the cleanest, safest way of deep-frying your food.

How a Deep Fryer Works

\"chicken Recipe\"

It is important to read the deep fryer instructions carefully because different fryers work in different ways. You will also need to have the correct oil to cook with because oils need different cooking times and the results vary depending, which oil you use.

Pour the oil into the deep fryer, keeping it well below the indicated max fill line. If there is no max fill line, check the instructions. You will need enough oil so your food is immersed but do not fill it right up because your food will displace some of the oil.

There will be a temperature control on the machine, either a button or a knob. Some fryers let you know when the oil has reached the right temperature but if your machine does not have this feature, you will need to use a thermostat or drop a cube of crustless white bread into the fryer. If it turns golden brown after one minute, the oil is at the right temperature for deep-frying.

If the oil is too hot, the food will be cooked on the outside and still partially raw inside. If the oil is not hot enough, the food will soak it up and come out soggy.

Put the food into the fryer, using a slotted spoons or tongs if there is no basket in the fryer. Do not put too much food in at once because this cooking method is fast and cooking in batches is quick and easy.

If you are frying frozen food, try to brush off as many ice crystals as you can because they can cause spattering when they come into contact with the hot oil. Close the deep fryer lid if there is one, while the food cooks. Keep an eye on the clock to time your cooking and then remove the cooked food with the basket, slotted spoon, or tongs. Drain it on paper towels to absorb excess grease.

Delicious Deep Fried Chicken Recipes

Chicken is one of the most popular foods for deep-frying because this cooking method gives such great results. Homemade deep fried chicken is just as good as anything you might get from a Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food restaurant and it is so much more cost effective and convenient to make your own.

In addition, you are not limited to the KFC side dish options at home. You can make whatever you like to go with your fried chicken, such as baked beans and mashed garlic potatoes or a chili dipping sauce or anything else you fancy.

Using a deep fat fryer means you can make a KFC fried chicken recipe whenever you want to, in the comfort of your own home. Deep-frying is easy and fast and the results are great.
